With the Quit menu you can quit applications, force them to quit, and force them to quit and automatically relaunch them.
Click the red button in the menu panel or menu bar or, if you have enabled it, press the Quit menu keyboard shortcut.

To quit an application, choose it from the Quit menu.
On Mac OS X 10.7, to quit an application and close (or keep) its windows, hold the Command and Option keys and choose it from the Quit menu.
Windows are closed if Resume is enabled system-wide or for the chosen application. Windows are kept if Resume is disabled system-wide or for the chosen application. To disable Resume system-wide, deselect the "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" option in the General pane of System Preferences.
Disabling or enabling window restoration for specific applications
To force an application to quit, hold the Option key and choose the application from the Quit menu.
To force an application to quit and automatically relaunch it, hold the Control key and choose the application.
Warning: By forcing an application to quit you lose any changes to documents open in the application.
Quit menu items are described below. To add or remove items from the Quit menu, open the Application Wizard pane in System Preferences and click Menus. Click the Customize Menus button and click Quit.
