Customizing the Special menu

You can add, remove, or rearrange Special menu items, you can add favorite files and frequently used folders, and you can choose whether to resolve aliases and show previews.

To customize the Special menu:

Open the Application Wizard pane in System Preferences, click Menus, and click the Customize Menus button. In the dialog that appears, click Special.

  • To add an item to the Special menu, click the Add (+) button at the bottom of the list and choose the new item.

  • To add a file or folder to the Special menu, click the Add button and choose "File or Folder". Browse and select the new item and click Add. You can also add files and folders by dragging them from the Finder to the list.

  • To add a smart folder to the Special menu, drag it from the Finder to the list.

  • To rearrange items in the Special menu, drag them in the list.

  • To remove one or more items from the Special menu, select them in the list and click the Remove (-) button at the bottom of the list or press the Delete key.

To select items that are next to each other (contiguous) in the list, press the Shift key and then click the first and last item; to select items that are not next to each other in the list, press the Command key and then click each item.

  • To replace a file or folder you have added to the Special menu, select the item in the list and choose "Change File or Folder" from the Action pop-up menu (looks like a gear). Browse and select the new item and click Change.

  • If you have added the Volumes item to the Special menu, you can decide what types of volumes (hard disks, external disks, removable media, connected servers, inactive disks) appear in the menu.

To choose what types of volumes appear in the Special menu, select the checkboxes of the types of volumes you want to show in the menu. Showing inactive disks lets you mount disks that you have ejected.

  • By default, the Special menu does not resolve aliases, but you can decide to replace aliases with original items.

To show original items, select the "Resolve aliases" checkbox. Resolved aliases will be marked with an arrow.

  • The Special menu previews pictures, music, movies, PDF files, and text documents and lets you quickly view file information.

To disable all types of previews, deselect the "Show previews" checkbox. To disable specific types of previews or adjust the size of previews, click the Customize Previews button.
